Michael Jr wins third consecutive Paula Southwell Memorial at Stateline!

Davies, Latta, Kibbe, and Frederes get first wins of year! Shagla repeats and Proper continues dominating his class!

 

 

Busti, NY (June 4, 2016): UInder threatening skies Stateline Speedway got in their third event of 2016, the Paula Southwell Memorial for the Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mods. Ishua, NY’s Rich Michael Jr took over at the front on lap three after starting sixth. Michael was challenged n ear the end of the event by a strong running David Scott, who pulled ahead briefly on the backstretch on the final lap but Michael roared back to the lead in turns three and four. In other action Dutch Davies won the Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Model feature, taking over at the front on lap eleven after starting sixth. Matt Latta led the Shults Auto Group flag to flag for his first Stateline Speedway win. Points leader Kelly Frederes led every lap of the Rusted Nutz ProMod feature from his outside front row starting berth for his first win of the current campaign. Fox’s Pizza Den points leader Dave Shagla Jr collected his second win of this season after starting sixth and taking the lead at he end of six laps in the caution-strewn event that reached the time limit and checkered at only ten laps complete. Former Himes Auction Company Super Sportsmen champion Jim Kibbe collected his first win of the season after taking the lead from Matt Kosinski at lap six after starting third. Andy Proper started sixth and took over at the front of the Bailey’s Towing & Recovery Super Challenger feature from early leader Travis Darling at lap four. Proper then went on to continue his undefeated season.

 

The Rusted Nutz ProMods were the first up with feature action with Jeremy Williams and points leader Kelly Frederes on the front row. After a lap one spin and caution by Zack Johnson the race went green all the way to checkers with Frederes leading every lap. Scott Gurdak wound up second with Jeremy Williams third, last week’s winner Jason Covey fourth, and Dennis Asel fifth. 

 

The Paula Southwell Memorial started the thirty lap feature for the Sugar Grove Beverage E-Mods with Troy Carr on the pole and Shane Crotty outside. On lap three Rich Michael Jr, the defending race winner, took over at the front after starting sixth with John Woodward, the fifth place starter, coming to second at lap five. By ten laps in David Scott was up to third after starting eighth. At fourteen laps complete the first caution flew when Mark DePouceau came to a stop at the pit entrance. The order for the restart was Michael over John Woodward, Scott, Dan Davies, and Carr. Michael, the two time defending champion had a quarter lap lead evaporate with the yellow flag. Scott immediately came to second at the drop of the green with Davies to third and Woodward back to fourth. Yellow flew at lap sixteen when Cale Crocker came to a stop in turn four with a flat right front tire. Michael, Scott, Davies, Woodward, and now Greg Johnson were the leaders for this restart with Michael, the two time defending champion of the event again pulling away at green. Just two laps later Ron Seeley spun in turn three, slowing the race for the third time. At nineteen laps complete Butch Southwell came to fifth place. Southwell was fourth on lap 21. Yellow again flew at 22, this time for David Lamphere, who came to a halt in turn four after spewing a cloud of smoke. Scott used the extreme high line and drew even with Michael at the white flag, then pulling ahead on the back straight but Michael charged back in turn three to edge Scott at the checkers by 0.075 second. Davies wound up third with Southwell fourth, and Shane Crotty fifth. 

 

The Fox’s Pizza Den Street Stocks started with Brad Church and Guy Adams on the front row with Church leading lap one. Chris Cochenhour took over at the front on lap two but spun in turn four before completing the lap and eventually involving thirteen cars with nine coming to a stop. Church, Bill Reeves, and Adams brought the race back to green but the start was called back. Church led to turn four of lap two when Reeves got by. Last week’s winner Dave Shagla was up to second at three complete when Tyler Dynys and Mike Moore tangled in turn four. At four laps in Shagla pulled even with Reeves at the line but Deven Dudenhoeffer spun in turn four. Only one more lap was in the books before caution again was flying, this time for Brian Crandall, spinning on the front straight. At this green Shagla led at the end of six but yet another caution flew at lap six for Wayne Mohawk, spinning in turn four. Scott Delahoy spun and sat on turn two with seven laps complete for yet another caution at lap seven as rain began to fall. Delahoy was sent to the pit for his second caution. With five to go Shagla had a ten car length lead that was erased when Church spun in turn four but then Rich Hemphill got onto the infield in turn three, hitting a “yuke” tire, sending it onto the track where it was hit hard my Tony Marotto. At this point the twenty-minute time limit was exceeded and the race was checkered. Shagla was declared the winner. Reeves wound up second with Cochenour third, Ramsey fourth, and Gary Fisher fifth. 

 

The Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Models were next with Andy Boozel and Matt Latta on the front row. Latta took the immediate lead with third starting Damian Bidwell coming to second. Defending champion Jason Genco came to second at seven complete and started chasing down Latta. Points leader Wyatt Scott came to third at lap nine, looking for his third win of the season. Nathan Earle spun in turn four at the halfway point for the first caution of the race. Latta led Genco, Scott, Bidwell, and Boozel back to green. Genco pulled next to the leader at lap eleven but spun sideways in turn one after running next to the leader for the entire lap, slamming one of the infield tires. At the resumption of racing Latta led Scott and Bidwell to green but Scott spun into one of the infield tires, again slowing the race. This green had Latta leading Bidwell, Jamie Brown, Boozel, and Scott Gurdak back to green. Ryan Scott got to third at lap seventeen. Up front, Bidwell was cruising to his first win of the season over Bidwell, a former champion, Ryan Scott, Scott Gurdak, another former champion, and Boozel. 

 

Bump Hedman and Chad Valone brought the Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Models to green with Valone, a former champion, leading the way. With two laps in Michael Oakes, Joe Layfield, and Chuck Parker all spun in turn four, slowing the race the first time. When racing resumed Valone shot back to the front with Dutch Davies, also a former champion, coming to second. Rich Gardner, yet another champion, was third with John Lobb fourth and Hedman back to fifth by seven laps into the race. Valone, running right against the wall, continued with Davies drawing alongside in the turns and taking over at the front on lap eleven. At twelve laps Lobb got by Gardner for third. Davies starting lapping back markers at fourteen complete. Chris Hackett, victim of a violent roll-over last week, was fifth at the time of the next caution, for Rich Gardner, at lap fifteen. The top five was now Davies, Valone, Lobb, Hackett, and David Scott. Valone spun out of the runner up spot at lap seventeen. Under caution Scott came to a halt in turn one and was towed rom the racing surface with apparent rear end problems. At nineteen laps Hackett suddenly slowed with a flat left rear tire. Davies continued to lead with Lobb up to second and Greg Oakes third at 21 laps when Kyle Scott and Bob Dorman got together in turn three, setting up another restart. The top five with four to go was Davies, Lobb, Oakes, Valone, and Doug Eck. At the white flag Gardner was back to fifth and at the checkers it was Davies, Lobb, Oakes, Valone, and Gardner. 

 

The Bailey’s Towing & Recovery Super Challengers had Travis Darling leading from green with Greg Marsh coming to second. Andy Proper took over at the front on lap four with Mike Riche up to third. Proper went on to the win with Riche second and Marsh third at lap seven. Proper scored the win with Marsh second, Kevin Covell third, Jacob Dunn fourth, and Mike Riche fifth. 

 

The Himes Auction Company Super Sportsmen feature had Steve Longo and Ted Kosinski bringing the field to green with Kosinski leading at one lap compete when Shane Horner spun in turn three. At the restart it was Matt Kosinski leading but two cars, Dan Nocero and Mike Little, piled up in turn three. Another yellow when Mike Kosinski stopped as the next green flew, negating that start. Matt Kosinski led at four complete with Jim Kibbe pulling even at the flag. Yellow again on lap five with Tommy Kosinski in the back straight wall. After green Matt Kosinski again led but Kibbe took over at lap six. With five to go it was Kibbe over Matt Kosinski, Ted Kosinski, points leader Dan Nocero, and Tommy Kosinski. Matt Kosinski and Ted Kosinski got together hard in turn two at eleven compete for yet another caution. With two laps to go another caution flew for Matt Kosinski in the front wall. With the white flag flying yet another spin by Horner slowed the race for the final time. Kibbe went on to the win with Nocero second, Tommy Kosinski third, Steve Longo fourth, and Ron Burgun fifth.
