Shagla wins Street Stock Special as 1968-82 Hooligan/Cadet drivers are remembered at Stateline!
Busti, NY (July 9, 2016): On a hot night with racing delayed nearly an hour after rain struck just before starting time, Dave Shagla Jr dominated the Fox’s Pizza Den Street Stock 25-lap special. The race was run as a tribute to the original Hooligan/Cadet class that ran from 1968-1982 . The class started in 1968 as “Hooligans”, a class designed for novice drivers just starting in racing. The class eventually evolved into the now-defunct Limited Late Models and then the Street Stocks of today. In the other classes the veteran John Lobb, son of one of the original Hooligan drivers, Harold Lobb, collected his first Overhead Door of Jamestown Super lAte Model feature win of the season over two-time winner Max Blair. Darrell Bossard denied Damian Bidwell his third feature win in a row while going on to his second win of the season. Matt Lux got his first-ever Stateline Speedway Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mod win over Kirk Bradley and 2015 Street Stock champion Jason Covey won his second Rusted Nutz ProMod feature. Former champion Jim Kibbe continued his dominance of the Himes Auction Super Sportsmen with his fourth win of the season while Kurt Babcock got his first win in the Bailey’s Towing & Recovery Super Challengers night capper.
The first feature of the night had former champions Dan Nocero and Michael Kosinski bringing the Himes Auction Super Sportsmen feature to green with Nocero leading from green with caution appearing at lap four when Mike Genco spun in turn four and Ted Kosinski spinning to avoid contact, suffering damage while spinning and needing towed from the scene. After green Nocero again took off with the lead. At halfway three time winner Nocero was still leading with Michael Kosinski and points leader Jim Kibbe fighting for second when Steve Longo spun, slowing the race again. With five laps left the leader suddenly slowed with apparent rear suspension problems, handing the lead to Kibbe, who drove on to his fourth triumph of the season over Michael Kosinski, Matt Kosinski, Tommy Kosinski, and Kendelle Kosinski.
Brad Blackshear, in his first appearance at Stateline this summer, led the Rusted Nutz Pro Mod feature after starting on the pole but Jason Covey got by at at four laps in with Scott Gurdak next to Blackshear at six laps and holding second at seven and Kelly Frederes getting by Blackshear too, coming to third at seven. At eight laps in Justin Carlson was fourth and Blackshear headed pitside with apparent problems. Frederes came to the runner-up spot at eleven laps in with Brandon Blackshear now fifth. Brian Mohawk spun in turn two, slowing the race for the first yellow. Mohawk again spun with three laps left, slowing the race the second time. When the checkers fell at the end of the twenty lapper it was Covey for his second win of the season over Frederes, Carlson, Gurdak, and Brandon Blackshear.
Troy Carr and Kirk Bradley brought the Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mods to green with third starting Matt Lux leading after one lap. Carr slipped wide in turn two on lap four, allowing Bradley into second while Lux was pulling away. Butch Southwell was next to Carr at eight laps complete but it was Greg Johnson getting by both at halfway with Southwell now fourth and Carr fifth. Johnson got alongside Bradley at lap fifteen but slipped back to third a lap later. Lux went on to his first Stateline E-Mod win over Bradley, Johnson, Southwell, and three time winner Justin Carlson.
Defending champion Jason Genco started the Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model feature from the pole with Jeff Hoffman alongside. Yellow slowed the event before a lap was in when Matt Harvey slowed to a halt in turn two. Genco and Hoffman ran side by side until Hoffman pulled ahead at the end of the back straight but then Genco pulled back to the front at the end of the lap. At the end of three laps sixth-starting Darrell Bossard, looking for his second of the season, was alongside Genco and leading at the end of five when caution for the spun car of Chad Schauers slowed the race. Damian Bidwell, winner of each of the last two weeks, was tied at the end of six, up from tenth on the grid. At halfway it was Bossard with Bidwell now second, Genco third, Ontario’s Sam Pennacchio fourth, and Dave Lyon fifth. Lyon got by Pennacchio with five laps left for fourth. With two to go Lyon got by Genco for third. Bossard went on to his second win of the season with Bidwell second, Lyon third, Genco fourth, and Andy Boozel, who got by Pennacchio on the final lap.
Doug Eck, trying for his second Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Models win of the season, brought the field to green with John Lobb outside. Lobb was leading at the end of the first lap with third starting Max Blair, a two time winner, coming to second. Yellow flew at the end of two when Dave Hess Jr slowed to a stop with a flat left rear tire. At the end of three Dutch Davies was third behind Blair with Chris Hackett fourth and David Scott filling out the top five. With eight complete yellow again flew when Ward Schell and Bob Dorman came together in turn four. Schell needed assistance to leave the speedway. With green again in the air, Lobb again was the leader with Blair second and Hackett and Davies fighting over third. At halfway it was Lobb over Blair, Hackett, Davies, and David Scott. The order remained the same through to the checkers with Lobb picking up his first win of the 2016 season.
Dave Shagla, the points leader and a three time winner, led the special 25-lap event for the Fox’s Pizza Den Street Stocks for the first three laps until Bob Leonard spun in turn two, slowing the race under caution. Sahgla led again for one lap when Guy Adams spun in turn two, collecting the cars of Scott Dellahoy, Denny Diegelman, Paul Nelson, and Sam Courson. Shagla again led after green with two time winner Bill Reeves coming to second and Chris Cochenour now third. At halfway it was still Shagla, Reeves, with last week’s winner Mark Ramsey up to third, with Cochenour and Brad Church filling out the top five. When the race resumed Tyler Dynys spun in turn two and was hit head on by Sam Courson. After green Shagla again led with Cochenour coming back to third at lap sixteen but again falling to fourth a lap later. Dynys again spun in turn four with seven laps left, again bunching the field. Ramsey ran alongside Reeves until lap 21 when Reeves finally pulled back to the spot while Shagla was opening his lead, going on to his fourth win of the year after a lap 23 yellow for Deven Dudenhoeffer. The final order was Shagla, Reeves, Ramsey with Cochenour fourth, barely ahead of Church.
Greg Marsh and Brandon Huffman led the Bailey’s Towing and Recovery Super Challengers to the green for the final feature of the night. Marsh led the first lap with third-starting Kurt Babcock coming to the front at the end of two. At three laps Mike Riche was second with Huffman now third and last week’s winner Skip Jackson fourth Jackson came to third at five complete but was back to fourth at halfway. Huffman came to second at five laps left but Babcock was speeding away to his first win at Stateline. Huffman wound up second with Jackson third, Riche fourth, and Andy Proper fifth.
