Dave Hess Jr and Dave Lyon get first 2016 wins at Stateline!

July 17, 2016

Scott, Carlson, Shagla, Kibbe, Proper all score repeat wins!

Busti, NY (July 16, 2016): Dave Hess Jr returned to the Stateline Speedway Presented by LiteHouse Auto Victory Lane after the Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Model feature for the first time since 2013 with his win Saturday night, his second triumph in three days in local racing after coming to the lead on the first lap from his row two starting berth. Dave Lyon, in a sixteen year old racer, collected his first win ever in the Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model finale. Lyon had brought out the old machine after destroying his 2016 machine in a roll-over wreck two weeks ago. All other classes had repeat winners with David Scott scoring his fifth Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mod win of the season, Justin Carlson got his fourth Rusted Nutz ProMod feature win, and Dave Shagla Jr won his fifth Fox’s Pizza Den Street Stock feature. Jim Kibbe was at the front of the field at the end of the Himes Auction Super Sportsmen finale for the fifth time this season with Andy Proper getting to the checkers first for the sixth time this season in the Bailey’s Towing & Recovery Super Challenger night-capper. A frightening moment occurred in the first challenger heat when Jasmine Markham and Bill Dunn got together in turn four with Dunn launching into an end-for-end flip into the catch fencing, knocking down a section of fencing but injuring no one.

Jason Black and Mark Ramsey started on the front row of the Fox’s Pizza Den Street Stock feature but Ramsey, the July 2 winner, got into the wall coming out of turn two on lap one causing a melee the ‘accordianed’ through the field eventually leading to the end of the race for not only Ramsey but Eric Hastings and Kyle Weilacher as well. When racing got back underway Chris Couchenour led through three cautions, all for the car driven by Tyler Dynys on laps two, four, and seven. Couchenour brought the field back to green with four time winner Dave Shagla second and heat winner Brad Church third. The top three were three abreast at the end of eight but Church was the leader at the end of nine when caution again flew again when pole-sitter Jason Black spun in turn four. Church, not yet a winner this season at Stateline, brought the field back to green but Guy Adams got into Deven Dudenhoeffer, again slowing the race and getting near the 25-minute time limit. Shagla immediately came around on the high side to draw even with Church at the halfway point. The two were side by side at the end of eleven but Shagla was solidly in the lead at the end of twelve when Bob Leonard spun in turn four, yet again putting the race under caution. Church ended his great run with four laps left when he spun from second in turn four. Shagla led the rest of the way with Tony Marotto second. Chris Couchenour third, Bill Best fourth, and Mike Moore fifth

Butch Southwell and Justin Carlson brought the Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mods to green with Southwell leading lap one, then being passed by David Scott, who had started third. Scott, a four time winner early in the season, led the way with Carlson second, Greg Johnson third, Troy Carr, a single winner, and Southwell through halfway. Carlson pulled pitside at twelve complete. With four to go Scott had over a quarter lap lead when Ron Seeley and Mike McGee spun in turn four. With three left Johnson slapped the wall in turn four, ending his run. Carr and Southwell ran hard over the next lap with Southwell coming to second and right to Scott’s rear bumper at the finish, Scott’s fifth win of the season over Southwell, Carr, Ryan Scott, and Rob Middleton.

Justin Carlson led lap one of the Rusted Nutz ProMod feature from the pole over outside pole sitter Kelly Frederes with Scott Gurdak third. Zack Johnson spun in turn four at lap seven with Dennis Hagg Jr spinning to avoid the wreck. For the green it was Carlson, Frederes, Gurdak, Josh Ferry, and Jeremy Williams. At nine laps in Bill Silvis got to fifth. With one lap left Ferry spun in turn four, setting up a one lap dash for cash. The order for the lap fourteen restart was Carlson, points leader Frederes, single winner Gurdak, two time winner Jason Covey, and Silvis. Carlson held on for win number four with the rest of the top five remaining the same.

Mike Genco and Jim Kibbe started on the front row of the Sportsmen feature with Genco leading lap one then giving it up to defending champion Dan Nocero Jr on lap two.  Before lap two was finished Genco spun from second in turn four, collecting Michael Kosinski, Shane Horner, getting “air time”, and Steve Longo. Kosinski and Longo needed towed.  With Nocero leading Jim Kibbe was second and Tommy Kosinski third when Genco spun in nearly the same place, this time all alone. Debris on the front straight slowed the race for the third time at lap eleven. With three laps left Kibbe got by Nocero then went on to the win, his fifth of the season. On the final lap third running Tommy Kosinski spun out of contention as Kibbe was coming to the checkers. Nocero wound up second with Tom Kosinski third, Kendelle Kosinski fourth, and Genco back up to fifth.

The first lap of the Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model feature only made it to turn two when Chad Schauers, R J Pistner, and Andy Boozel all got tangled up in turn two. The front row of Dave Lyon and two time winner Damian Bidwell brought the field back to green with Lyon leading lap one as Bidwell used the low side to get even with Lyon on lap two but Lyon was the leader at the stripe. On lap four Bidwell changed his line to the high side but Lyon was driving away with a three length lead at the end of five. Two time winner Darrell Bossard was running third and closing on Bidwell for second at eight laps in while Lyon was lengthening his lead. At halfway the order was Lyon, Bidwell, Bossard, defending champion Jason Genco, and Scott Gurdak. At six to go Bossard was next to Bidwell but didn't clear him till a lap and a half later. Bossard caught Lyon on the final lap but the 14L went on to his first-ever Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model win. Bossard settled for second with Bidwell third, Genco fourth, and Gurdak fifth.

A full field of 24 Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Models headed to the green, led by John Volpe and Damian Bidwell in their final warm-up for the 60th Anniversary Special set for Thursday, July 21st. Dave Hess Jr came from third spot to lead the field at the end on one lap but Bobby Rohrer and Bob Dorman got together and spun in turn three as the leaders crossed the line. Hess led the feature back to green with Bidwell second and Chris Hackett coming to third, dropping Volpe to fourth. Using the extreme high line Hackett was challenging Hess and was even at six complete then blasting by at seven laps for the lead. At halfway the top five were Hackett, Hess, Bidwell, Rich Gardner, and John Lobb. Hess, using the extreme high side got back by Hackett at seventeen compete with Gardner third at eighteen. Coming through turn three to complete lap nineteen Hackett spun trying to negotiate lapped traffic. For the restart it was Hess, Gardner, Lobb, David Scott, and Dutch Davies. Gardner got next to Hess at the line with nineteen complete but Hess was still leading at twenty. Running low on the track Gardner was able to get next to Hess in the turns but the momentum on the high side kept Hess in the lead at the line. Hess went on to his first Stateline win of the season over Gardner, Lobb, Dutch Davies, and David Scott, all with feature wins in 2016.

Andy Proper and John Zeleznick brought the final feature, the Bailey’s Towing & Recovery Super Challengers, to green with Proper leading from the get-go. At halfway it was Proper, Skip Jackson, Pete Volpe, Greg Marsh, and last week’s winner Kurt Babcock. Babcock got by Marsh for fourth at eight complete.  On the final lap it was Proper first to the checkers in the all-green race with Jackson, Volpe, last week’s winner Kurt Babcock, and Marsh following.
