Hess Doubles Up Wins at Stateline! Boozel, Boardman, Lunger, and Heineman also score wins!

May 1, 2021  |  by Jay Pees

Busti, NY (May 1, 2021): After a long, cold winter, Stateline Speedway successfully got its 66th consecutive season of dirt track racing underway under cold and sometimes threatening conditions as a light rain was felt at times, but not enough to dampen excitement or track conditions. When the final checkers had fallen Dave Hess was standing in Victory Lane after both the UMP Modified feature and the Super Late Model feature. Also winning features were Andy Boozel in the RUSH Late Model division, John Boardman in Penn-Ohio ProStocks, Dennis Lunger in the RUSH Pro Mods, and Holden Heineman in the Challenger division.

The first class on the track was the RUSH Pro Mods with Steve Dixon and Tyler Carlson on the front row of the 27-car field. The race made it to turn four of the first lap before caution struck for Carlin and Carl Irons, the row two starters, spinning in turn four. Dixon led lap one followed by Alan Brewer, former champion Dennis Lunger, Adam Ashcroft, and Greg Johnson. At four laps Lunger was in second and the caution flew for debris in turn two. A four car incident in turn one involving Cody Stronghart, Dean Ingalls, Donald May, and Robert Cetrell Sr was the next incident causing the race to be interrupted. At halfway it was Dixon, Lunger, Brewer, Ashcroft, and Greg Johnson showing the way. At twelve laps Tyler Sutton spun in turn four. Mike Eschrich worked his way into the top five by that point. With two laps left Dean Ingalls spun in turn one and was collected by the leader! With Dixon gone Lunger inherited the lead and went on to his first win of the season over Brewer, Ashcroft, Irons (who took fourth on lap 19), and Eschrich.

Next up were the RUSH Late Models with Darrell Bossard and Andy Boozel on the front row and still running side by side at the end of lap one. Matt Sipes, Ward Schell, and David Pangrazio filled out the top five. Bossard settled into the lead after the opening lap and started lapping backmarkers by lap six. At seven Steve Houser spun directly in front of Bossard, eliminating him from the event, the second leader in as many features to succumb to the foibles of lapped traffic. For the restart it was Boozel, Sipes, Pangrazio, Schell, and Jason Genco. By halfway Pangrazio was second, Genco up to third, Jeremy Wonderling fourth, and Bud Watson fifth. Another caution at lap twelve slowed the way, then when the cars came by on lap thirteen Boozel and Genco were side by side for the lead with Genco on the high side. He slipped back then and was side by side with Pangrazio for second a lap later with Pangrazio getting the edge at the line. The top five wound up Boozel, Pangrazio, Genco, Wonderling, and Watson

The UMP Modified feature was next with Brandon Grossman and Cale Crocker at the front. In turn two of the first lap the leaders were three-wide in turn two with Grossman, Crocker, and Dennis Lunger all trying to lead. Crocker emerged the leader over Grossman, Lunger, Dave Hess, and Butch Southwell. At five laps it was Crocker, Lunger, Hess, Grossman, and Southwell. Grossman and Southwell were side by side for fourth at eight laps. At nine laps Crocker and Lunger were side by side for the lead, but Lunger had it at halfway, with Hess third, then Southwell, with Michael McGee fifth. at lap fourteen Lunger and Hess were side by side for most of the lap with Hess leading by .008 second. With five laps left Hess was solidly in the lead, going on to the win over Lunger, Crocker, McGee, with Troy Johnson getting to fifth at the checkers.

It was an "all Scott front row" for the start of the Super Late Model feature after scheduled outside front row starter, Chris Hackett, experienced mechanical issues and was unable to make the race. Pole sitter Wyatt Scott led lap one over his father, David Scott, then Dave Hess, Bump Herman, and Bob Dorman filled out the top five. Greg Oakes then replaced Dorman for fifth. At halfway Hess had moved to second and was challenging for the lead at fourteen laps. At fifteen laps Wyatt Scott had a one length lead but Hess managed to get by at turn two at seventeen laps but the younger Scott was again the leader by half a length at seventeen laps. With six to go Scott had a nose in the lead at the line but Hess was again the leader when the got to turn two, a lead he never surrendered. David Scott managed to get by his son for second before the checkers fell. At the finish it was Hess, David Scott, Wyatt Scott, Bump Hedman, and Oakes.

The Penn-Ohio ProStocks were brought to green by Jason Black and Wesley McCray. Black looped his mount in turn one. Then McCray lead fourth-starting Joe Stajnrajh, Jackson Humanic, Matt Sampson, and John Boardman through lap one. Boardman was fourth at lap two. In turn four on lap three McCray got sideways and recovered to still lead with Sampson, Boardman, Bill Applebee, and Curtis Bish Jr now the top five. Boardman then came to second and Bish to fourth. Yellow flew at lap four when David Baker came to a halt near the turn four wall. Another yellow flew at lap six when Steve Keith Jr spun in turn two, with Josh Beckstrom getting involved. On the restart Boardman took over the lead but at the line was side by side with McCray. At halfway it was Boardman, McCray, Sampson, Bish, and Chris Withers. Bish eventually got to second at the finish but Boardman was the winner. Third was McCray, with Sampson fourth and Withers fifth.

Greg Marsh and Bodey McClintock were the front row for the final event of the evening, the Challenger feature. Third starting Holden Heineman was the leader at one lap over Chris Horton, Bodey McClintock, John Mease, and Tommy LaBarbera. A bumper on the track in turn three caused the first caution at lap three. At four laps Pete Volpe spun in turn two with Mark Winens climbing the back straight wall to avoid him. William Sunderland was also involved. Another bumper on the track slowed the race at four laps. Joseph Foti met the turn two wall at at six laps. Now it was Heineman leading Horton, Mease, and Rick Feely. Yellow again at lap seven when McClintock got into the turn three wall. At nine laps Horton was beginning to slow and slipped back to fourth. Jon Seekings got to fifth with one to go. The final front five were Heineman, Mease, Feely, Horton, and Seekings.
