$3,000 To Win RUSH Late Model Special

David Scott wins Memorial Day Special!

May 29, 2016

“Busti” Bobby Schnars remembered in moving tribute.

Busti, NY (May 28, 2016): Rain threatened to wash out activities at Stateline Speedway presented by LiteHouse Auto all afternoon and evening, with some sprinkles felt right at the start of the first feature but all racing was completed even as lightning was observed in the distance and rain fell all around the track. Stateline Speedway historian Randy Anderson delivered a moving eulogy in remembrance of Bobby Schnars, winner of 79 Late Model feature events and 25 Sportsmen features over a twenty year period starting in 1957. Long-time competitor John Lacki lettered a “Tribute Car” with Bobby’s signature red body with a bright white M1 number. The tribute car paced the feature with Dick Barton driving. Barton is the only drive to have won more Super Late Model races than Schnars, eighty from 1986 through 2014. When the 35-lap feature was checkered David Scott was in the Overhead Door of Jamestown Victory Lane.

Wyatt Scott got his first-ever feature win on opening night this year and backed that up with another win in the Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model feature. David Scott also won the Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mod feature, his second in a row. Jason Covey, the 2015 Street Stock champion, won his first Rusted Nutz Pro-Mod feature and Dave Shagla took the honors in the Fox Pizza Street Stock finale. Defending champion Andy Proper continued his domination of the Bailey’s Rowing and Recovery Super Challenger feature. The evening was punctuated with two serious “barrel-rolls”, the first by Super Late Model Chris Hackett and the second by the E-Mod driven by Greg Johnson. Although both cars appeared destroyed both drivers walked away from the wrecks un-injured.

The Rusted Nutz Pro-Mod feature was first on the agenda with Jeremy Williams and Jason Covey up front for the green. With only one lap complete Justin Carlson spun, slowing the race. After green again flew it was Covey leading but Dennis Asel and Brian Mohawk spun in turn three, again slowing the event at three laps. Covey, the 2015 Street Stock champion, started pulling away from the field after green with Kelly Frederes second and Williams third. With five of the fifteen laps left Covey came into lapped traffic and had half a straight lead by the two-laps left signal. Before the white flag could fly Zach Johnson looped his car in turn three. With green again on the air Frederes was challenging for the win with the leaders side by side at half a lap left into turns three and four when Covey again pulled out to the lead and the win. Jeremy Williams finished third with Dennis Asel fourth at the stripe and Scott Gurdak fifth.

The Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Models ran their parade and pace laps with John Lacki's car re-numbered M1 and driven by Dick Barton, retired champion of Stateline Speedway honoring Busti Bobby Schnars leading the field. After a moving eulogy by track historian Randy Anderson with the cars parked on the front straight the crowd stood in honor of Bobby for a moment of silence. Robbie Blair and Rich Gardner, both former champions, brought the field to green with Ward Schell and Jason Dobson spinning in turn two before one lap was complete. The cars were restarted from the original lineup with Dobson and Schell moved to the rear. Blair led lap one with Gardner and Greg Oakes side by side for second. Heading into turn three on lap two Chris Hackett barrel rolled three times up into the wall, landing on his roof but un-injured. Bobby Rohrer and Matt Urban both managed to avoid contact of the flipping car immediately in front of them. With only one lap completed the lineup had Blair leading with Gardner second, Oakes third, John Lobb fourth, and Jason DuPont fifth. During the pace laps Blair retired pitside with a flat left rear tire. Gardner led lap two with Oakes leading lap three and DuPont coming to third. DuPont was second at four complete when Jason Dobson spun in turn four. DuPont and Oakes were side by side at the line on laps six and seven but DuPont was in sole possession of the lead at eight. At ten laps DuPont lead Oakes, Lobb, eighth staring Max Blair, and ninth starting David Scott. At fourteen complete Oakes was just ahead at the line with DuPont going high. At nineteen laps in, Bob Dorman spun on the main straight, again slowing the event. Under caution DuPont pulled to the pit with mechanical ails. At sixteen compete it was Oakes, Lobb, Max Blair, Scott, and Dutch Davies leading the pack when Andy Boozel spun into the infield and came back on the track in the wrong direction. Caution flew at halfway when fifth running Hedman spun on turn two. At this green David Scott used the extreme high side to come to second at lap 19 then the lead at twenty but back to second a lap later. With ten to go Lobb and Scott were locked in a fierce battle for second with Lobb gaining it at lap 26 and then getting by Oakes for the lead a lap later. At 28 complete Scott got to second and the race was on for the win. With five to go Lobb was starting to pull away but Scott roared around the outside to the lead a lap later. With two to go Scott was opening up a big lead, stretching it to half a straight. Scott won over Max Blair who got by Lobb on the final turn with Oakes fourth and Chad Valone fifth.

The Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mods came to green with John Woodward Jr and David Scott on the front row. Scott, fresh off one of the most competitive races in track history, immediately launched into the lead with Woodward second at one lap but Butch Southwell coming by at two laps. Greg Johnson came to third at four complete with Michael McGee up to fifth. On lap seven McGee moved by Woodward but Woodward was again fourth two laps later. Johnson and Southwell got together on the main straight fighting for second at lap thirteen with Johnson flipping wildly up over the wall into the catch fencing, then erupting into flames, but uninjured. After the red flag was life's and racing resumed Troy Carr got to second with Southwell now third, Woodward fourth and Ron Seeley fifth. On lap 18 Scott got too wide in turn one, clipping the wall and turning the lead over to Troy Carr. A lap later a lapped car made contact with Carr, spinning him and handing the lead back to Scott. At the checkers it was Scott, Southwell, Woodward, Seeley, and Rob Middleton. Only four cars were on the lead lap.

Chad Schauers and Ryan Scott brought the Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Model field to green with caution appearing at turn two when Schauers spun. Ryan Scott led his cousin Wyatt Scott after one lap with Andy Boozel third,  Jamie Brown fourth, and Matt Harvey fifth. At the end of nine laps Wyatt powered into the lead over Ryan Scott. Caution appeared at halfway when Robert Meacham  spun in turn three. After green he again spun in turn one. Wyatt Scott again led Ryan Scott and Boozel after the green, pulling out to a big lead. With three laps left Scott Gurdak came to second but Ryan Scott again got the spot a lap later with Boozel again coming to third. At the checkers it was Wyatt Scott, with Boozel getting by  Ryan Scott for second,  Scott Gurdak fourth, and Jamie Brown. It was the second win in a row for the young Scott, who had just won his first-ever feature on opening night.

The Fox Pizza Street Stocks were next on the track with Bill Applebee and Bill Reeves leading the pack to green. On the first lap Brad Church and Bill Applebee got together coming through turn two with Church ending up sitting backwards on the back straight. Reeves took the lead with week one winner Gary Fisher coming to second. At two complete Dave Shagla got to third but yellow was in the air when Jason Black spun on the back chute. Shagla was second after three laps with Chris Cochenour up to fourth, then third after four. At halfway Shagla was leading over Reeves, Cochenour, Fisher, and Brian Crandall. Shagla opened his lead with Cochenour battling for second at eleven complete but spinning off turn four, again slowing the event. For the restart it was Shagla leading Reeves, Fisher, Crandall, and Mark Ramsey. Scott Delahoy’s car erupted into flames on the back straight on lap twelve, yet again slowing the event. Shagla immediately scooted out front on the final restart, going on to his first win of the season over Reeves, Fisher, Tony Marotto, and Ramsey.

Steve Longo and Jim Kibbe brought the Himes Auction Sportsmen to the start with former champion Kibbe leading with the defending champion Dan Nocero Jr coming to second then the lead at five laps complete. Kibbe was back alongside Nocero with three laps left but Nocero lead with two to go. Nocero went on to his second win of the season with Kibbe settling for second over Ted Kosinski, Mike Kosinski, and Steve Longo.

Nine Bailey’s Towing & Recovery Challengers started their feature with Pete Volpe and Skip Jackson up front. By three laps in defending champion Andy Proper was second from fifth on the grid but Volpe had a huge lead. Mike Riche was third at lap five. At halfway Proper was closing the gap and was side by side at lap ten, leading a lap later. Proper went on to the win his second of the season over Volpe, Travis Darling, Greg Marsh, and Ben Sudul.
