Featuring a special appearance by the Pennsylvania Vintage Modifieds!
Busti, NY (June 9, 2016): Stateline Speedway ran a six-cylinder (later-V8) coupe class called “Sportsmen” from 1962 through 1984. The drivers in that class will be honored Saturday night with the first of Stateline’s three scheduled “Tribute Night” specials. The Sportsmen were added with a couple specials in 1962 and became part of the weekly show in 1963. Westfield, NY’s Bob Gilbert won the very first event for the class. The all-time winner’s list had Ronnie Blackmer on top with 61 wins over Bob Schnars with 25. Lars Huling is third on the list with 24, Jay Plyler fourth with 18, and Skip Furlow fifth with 17 wins. Fifty-four drivers registered wins over the life of the class with Blackmer collecting four championships in 1964, ’65, ’68, and ’77. Plyler collected three championship trophies, 1969, ’70, and ’71. Bobby Schnars, Buddy Erickson, and Dick Barton each have two championships. All champions are invited to the track Saturday and as many as possible will be interviewed over the course of the evening’s activities. Cargo Auto Parts is the sponsor making this tribute night possible.
The highlight of the evening will be a special appearance by the Pennsylvania Vintage Modifieds, a group that has restored several vintage racers from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The group consists of about a dozen old racers that put on a heat and feature, actually racing, not just a demonstration. Drivers include Alan Byerly, Les Myers, Jim “Dingo” Kirkwood (from Australia!), and Gary Haupt. A heat and a feature will be contested.
The Himes Auction Super Sportsmen are the featured class this week with extra laps and extra purse for their special event sponsored by Welder’s Supply. Defending champion Dan Nocero Jr has two wins and leads former champion Jim Kibbe in the season long chase. Kibbe has one win on the season, that coming last Saturday night. Steve Longo, former champion Ted Kosinski, and Tommy Kosinski fill out the top five.
All classes will be in action with last week’s winners looking to add to their win totals. Dave Scott, Dutch Davies, and Max Blair all have Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Model feature wins this season but John Lobb leads in the points standing by forty over Chad Valone with Scott third. Rich Gardner is fourth and Davies fifth.
The Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Models are currently paced by Ryan Scott, not yet with a feature win this season. Wyatt Scott, winner in each of the first two weeks, is second with Andy Boozel, Scott Gurdak, and Chad Schauers round out the top five. Matt Latta scored the win last Saturday night.
Double winner David Scott leads the Sugar Grove Beverage E-Mod title chase over Butch Southwell, Troy Carr, Greg Johnson, and Ron Seeley. Rich Michael won the Paula Southwell Memorial last Saturday night.
In the first three weeks of racing for the all new Rusted Nutz ProMod division three drivers have visited Victory Lane, Justin Carlson, Jason Covey, and points leader Kelly Frederes. Covey is second with Scott Gurdak third. Jeremy Williams and Dennis Asel fill out the top five.
Two-time winner Dave Shagla, Jr leads the Fox’s Pizza Den Street Stocksover Bill Reeves and opening night winner Gary Fisher with Tony Marotto fourth and Bill Best fifth.
Andy Proper has dominated the Bailey’s Towing and Recovery Super Challengers, winning all three features contested to date and holding an over 100-point edge over Travis Darling. Pete Volpe is third with Greg Marsh fourth, and Ben Sudol fifth.
Future dates on the Stateline Speedway calendar to remember are the appearance by the Patriot Sprint Group on June 25, then July 2 fireworks will light the skies and a giant give-a-way by Neil’s Propane consisting of bicycles, scooters, teeshirts, and hats will light up the faces of Stateline’s younger fans. Then the biggest race of Stateline’s 60-year history, the Legacy Tribute to the Original Owners, Jerry and Don Frank, Leonard Briggs, Lloyd Williams, and Marv Thorpe. The highlight of that night, and the entire season, will be a 60-lap feature for the Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Models.
