September 4, 2016

Busti, NY (September 3, 2016): All seven champions were crowned at Stateline Speedway Saturday night with Dutch Davies collecting his third Overhead Door Of Jamestown Super Late Model title while Rob Blair collected his first feature win at Stateline this season. Darrell Bossard win his first Stateline championship in the Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Models while Dennis Lunger won the final feature of the season, Butch Southwell won his first Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mod championship and his first feature since 2013. Scott Gurdak prevailed for the first-ever Rusted Nutz ProMod title, but Justin Carlson the class to the checkers for the eighth time this season to cap off his season with the win. Dave Shagla came away the champion in the Fox’s Pizza Den Street Stocks while Bill Reeves collected his third win of the season. The Himes Auction Super Sportsmen saw Dan Nocero Jr took over the points lead and the championship fight with his win in their season finale. John Zeleznick won his first-ever Bailey’s Towing & Recovery Super Challenger feature but Andy Proper collected his second championship in as many years. During the driver’s meeting prior to the night’s events, it was announced that the Himes Auction will compete again in 2017, ending speculation that the class would be dropped.

Matt Kosinski and Steve Longo brought the Himes Auction Super Sportsmen to green with Kosinski leading lap one then defending champion Dan Nocero Jr leading lap two when the first caution flew for Kosinski’s spin on the back stretch on lap three. Points leader Jim Kibbe spun with mechanical troubles on the first lap after green, a malfunction that cost him the points championship when Nocero went on to win his sixth feature of the season. At the halfway point Mike Kosinski’s engine erupted in smoke and flame, slowing the race under caution again. Tommy Kosinski spun in turn one after the green, negating the start. Nocero won over Ted Kosinski with Shane Horner third, Steve Longo fourth, and Tom Kosinski fifth. With the win Nocero won his his second consecutive points title by 61 markers over Kibbe.

Scott Gurdak and Jason Covey started the Rusted Nutz ProMods feature from the front row with Gurdak taking command at the drop of the green. Dennis Asel slowed on the front straight of lap two, bringing caution over the field. With three complete Dominic DePonceau spun in turn four, again slowing the event. Gurdak continued to lead after green with points leader Kelly Frederes second and seven time winner Justin Carlson pressing Frederes for the runner up spot. At halfway Carlson was second by a slim margin and two lengths in front of Frederes a lap later. With five to go Kevin Ruhlman spun in turn four. After green Carlson challenged Gurdak for the lead and the two staged a side by side battle until two laps left when Carlson surged ahead, going on to his eighth win of the season. Gurdak was second with Frederes third, Jeramy Williams fourth, and Jason Covey fifth. Gurdak won the championship by six points over Frederes.

The 25-lap, $1000 to win special for the Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mods started with a four-wide salute to the America flag. Butch Southwell brought the field to green with Mike Kinney outside but Ryan Scott spun in turn two, necessitating a compete restart. Southwell and Kinney ran the first three quarter lap side by side with Southwell pulling ahead at the end of the stripe. At  four laps complete Troy Carr, Greg Johnson, and David Scott got together on the back straight, resulting in flat tires for Johnson, who came to a halt in turn three, and Scott, who went to the pit for new rubber. Brandon Blackshear and Steve Rex then got  “locked” together in turn three. Southwell led the first lap back green but Ryan Scott again spun, this time in turn three. The top five at this point were Southwell, Kinney, John Boyd, Dennis Lunger, and Al Brewer. Southwell again led after green with Lunger to second at lap seven and Brewer to third. Kirk Bradley spun in turn two, also involving Mike McGee and Dan Davies. At ten complete Southwell led Brewer, Lunger, Boyd, and Kinney when Greg Johnson came to the infield, and was collected by Kurt Thorpe, slowing the race yet again. At halfway Kinney came to third as Southwell and Brewer fought for the lead. With five laps left Southwell had pulled out to a near half straight lead over Brewer with Kinney, Lunger and Boyd filling out the top five. At two laps left Brewer had closed to two lengths but Southwell went on to the win, his first win since 2013. Brewer was second with Kinney third, with Lunger, and Troy Johnson filling out the top five.  With the win, Southwell collected the points championship for 2016, his first in a Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mod.

Pete Alspaugh and Matt Urban brought the Overhead Door of Jamestown Super Late Models to green with Urban leading at the end of one over Doug Eck, Alspaugh, and Rob Blair. Eck took over at three complete  with Blair coming to second a lap later. At five laps it was Eck, Blair, Urban, Chris Hackett, and Alspaugh. At nine laps in Eck had a half straight lead over Blair when Bob Dorman spun in turn two, slowing the race under yellow. After green Eck again led and again was slowly pulling out to a bigger lead every lap. At halfway Eck led Blair, Hackett, Dutch Davies, and David Scott. The top five at this point were all feature winners during 2016. At twenty laps Blair was reeling Eck in when the leaders got to lapped traffic. Then at 21-laps Jake Finnerty spun in turn two, putting Blair and Hackett right on Eck’s tail for the restart. Davies and Scott were still fourth and fifth. With three laps left Blair and Eck were side by side with Blair pulling ahead a lap later then going on to his first win of the year at Stateline. Eck wound up second with Hackett third, Davies fourth, and Scott fifth. With his fourth place finish, Dutch Davies scored his third points championship at Stateline, the first two coming in 2011 and 2012.

The Bailey’s Towing and Recovery Super Challenger feature started with Pete Volpe and John Zeleznick on the front row. Points champion Andy Proper was unable to start in the feature after finishing fourth in his heat. Volpe, a two time winner this summer, took the immediate lead with Zeleznick second but caution was shown for the spun cars of John Angeletti and Travis Darling in turn three. Volpe again led after green but suddenly slowed coming out of turn four on lap three. Zeleznick led the field back to green with Gary Troyer now second and Brandon Huffman third, Mike Riche fourth, and Kevin Covell fifth. Huffman was second at the end of four but Zeleznick was pulling away when caution flew again, this time for Joey Karash, stopped in turn two. Garrett Yeager spun in turn two on the restart. Under caution Proper joined the event, five laps down. With three laps left Brandon Huffman spun in turn two, nearly rolling over. The order for the green was now Zeleznick. Gary Troyer, Mike Riche, Kevin Covell, and Skip Jackson. Zeleznick went on to the win, his first-ever, over Troyer, Jackson, Riche, and Darling.

The Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Models started their feature with Chad Valone and defending champion Jason Genco on the front row. Genco, the defending champion, led the way after one lap. Valone and Darrell Bossard exchanged second and third spots on lap three with Bossard then getting by Genco at lap five. Dennis Lunger came to third at seven complete and to second on turn one of lap eight. At halfway it was Bossard, Lunger Genco, Valone, and Matt Harvey.  Bossard reached the back markers at lap twelve with Lunger right on his rear bumper, looking for a way by a lap later. Using the outside Lunger got a run on the leader at lap sixteen, and, going around a lapped car at the same time,  was the leader at seventeen complete. With the white flag flying Robert Mitcham spun in turn two, slowing the race under caution for the first time. Lunger went on to his second win of the season over Bossard, a four-time winner, Genco, the defending champion, Valone, and Harvey. With his second place finish, Darrell Bossard overtook Ryan Scott to collect the points championship.

The final event of the evening was the Fox's Pizza Street Stocks feature with Bill Reeves and Tony Marotto on the front of the field for the green. Reeves led the way from the start with Marotto, trailing smoke, second, and Scott Delahoy third after two laps. Yellow flew at lap three when Bill Applebee spun in turn four. Reeves, twice a winner this season, led when green was again deployed with Marotto, still trailing smoke, in second, and Chris Couchenour third at six laps complete.  At eight laps Bill Best was fourth with points leader Dave Shagla fifth after starting sixth. Deven Dudenhoeffer spun at the halfway point, slowing the race for the third time under yellow. Couchenour came to second after green with Shagla third at eleven complete. Debris in turn two was the reason for the next yellow, at sixteen laps complete. At green Shagla immediately assumed second but John Britt, Dana Maybe, and Bob Leonard had problems, spinning and coming to a halt in turn two, negating the start. At two laps to go Shagla was second with Couchenour third, Marotto fourth, and Mohawk fifth. Reeves went on to his third win of the season. Mohawk spun from fifth on the final lap, elevating Tyler Dynys to fifth at the finish. Shagla, on the strength of seven feature wins, earned the points title.
