Williamson, Eck, and Gurdak big winners on night one of the September Shootout!

September 10, 2016

Busti, NY (September 9, 2016): the BRP Big Block Modifieds made their visit to Stateline Speedway Presented by LiteHouse Auto with a full field of 24 of the ground-pounding racers with Matt Williamson prevailing in the 35-lap finale while Doug Eck was first to the Spanky Hall’s four-checkers finish in the Overhead Door of Jamestown UFo Super Late Model 38-lap feature. It was Eck’s second feature win of the season. In the season-ending 25-lap feature for the Rusted Nutz ProMods it was newly crowned points champion Scott Gurdak winning are battling eight time winner Justin Carlson. The Shults Auto Group RUSH Crate Late Models and the Sugar Grove Beverage Outlaw E-Mods ran qualifying heats for their season ending features Saturday, Day Two of the September Shootout. The Saturday portion will have the UFo Super Late Models competing in a 55-lap extravaganza to bring down the curtain on the 2016 season.

The final Rusted Nutz ProMod feature of the season started with Kelly Frederes and points champion Scott Gurdak on the front row but yellow flew as the cars got to turn two on lap one with five of the thirteen starters involved. When the race got underway Frederes led lap one but Jason Covey and Bill Silvis spun in turn four as Frederes completed lap one. Frederes led the field back to green but again cars spun, this time in turn two. At the end of two Gurdak was challenging for the lead and was ahead at the end of three laps. Debris on turn three brought the yellow out with six complete. Eight time winner Justin Carlson was narrowly ahead at the end of seven. Gurdak got back ahead at eight compete and began pulling away from Carlson and heading into lapped traffic with two to go, allowing Carlson to close a bit. Yellow flew again with fourteen complete when Kevin Ruhlman spun in turn two. Gurdak again led after green with Carlson getting next to him several times over the next  laps but Gurdak again started opening his lead with three to go of the 25-lapper. At the checkers it was Gurdak , Carlson, Frederes, Covey, and Bill Silvis.

The BRP Modified feature event was for 35-laps and started 24 cars with Mike Bowman and Matt Williamson on the front row and J R McGinley and Rex King Sr on row two. Six cars failed to make it through turn two when Eric Gabany got into the retaining wall with five more cars piling into him, blocking the racing surface. Bowman took the lead at the green then he and Williamson started pulling away from the rest of the field, setting a pace that allowed them to catch the rear of the field with only five laps in the books. Yellow flew at seven complete when Tom Glenn spun in turn two. On the double file restart Williamson grabbed the lead at green with Rex King Jr coming by Rex King Sr for third behind Bowman. Yellow flew again at twelve complete when Tom Mattocks slowed on the back straight. Disaster struck on the restart when King Jr got into the turn two wall with nine more cars piling into the accident scene. Under the yellow the racer of Jimmy Holden caught fire, apparently battery issues, ending his run. After green Ricky Richner and Rex King Jr got together in turn two and then got into the wall. Williamson and Bowman completed lap thirteen side by side with Williamson in front a lap later. Dave Murdick came to third with Chad Brachman getting next to him at the line at seventeen complete. Brachman was solidly in third  a lap later with eleventh starting Erick Rudolph up to fifth, then fourth at 22-laps. Murdick and Gabany got together in turn three, both spinning with ten laps left. For this green it was Williamson, Bowman, Brachman, and Rudolph. Brachman got to second with Rudolph third at 28 laps finished.  Skip Moore spun in turn three with four laps remaining, again slowing the race. Early leader Bowman had the right front tire deflate under the yellow, sending him pitside. Brachman got next to the leader with three left but slid wide coming to the two lap signal. Williamson went on to the win with Brachman second, Rudolph third, Brad Rapp fourth, and Kevin Boland fifth.

The UFo Super Late Models started their 38-lap feature with Darrell Bossard and Matt Urban on the front row with newly crowned champion Rob Blair starting tenth. Bossard led to turn two when Urban came by on the outside, then Greg Oakes came to second a lap later. At five laps in it was Urban, Oakes, David Scott, eleventh starting Mike Pegher, and Bossard. Then Max Blair spun in turn two slowing the race under caution. With green again on the track Urban again led but Bump Hedman spun in turn four with Rob Blair, Chad Valone, and John Lobb getting involved. UFo points leader Dylan Yoder went wide to miss the wreck, but suffered body damage. Valone and Lobb both had to be towed from the track. With one more lap of green Urban, Oakes, and Pegher were three wide at the stripe for the lead with Oakes narrowly leading at nine complete. Pegher was second at ten then 2016 points champion Dutch Davies spun after suffering apparent mechanical ails on the front straight. Pegher got to the lead on the first lap under green with Oakes second, then Urban, Doug Eck, and Dave Scott. Eck was third at thirteen complete, then next to Oakes a lap later when Chris Hackett and Waylon Wagner got together resulting in Wagner spinning out at the end of the front straight. Both were sent to the rear for the restart. Using the extreme high line Pegher continued to lead with Eck coming to second at sixteen laps. Eck stayed on the bottom as the two fought for the lead every lap. Pegher began showing smoke at the halfway point but continued to lead and lengthen his lead, getting to the back of the pack at 25-laps when caution was thrown due to the smoke pouring from the rear of the leader, who headed pitside under the caution. For the restart it was Eck leading Oakes, Scott, Matt Lux, and Urban. Eck pulled ahead with the race back to green. With ten to go it was Eck, Oakes, Lux, Scott and Hackett up from the rear at lap fourteen. Hackett faltered in turn two at 29 laps, allowing Dave Hess Jr and Bossard to get by. Bump Hedman stopped on turn two with eight to go, slowing the race again. Eck opened up a substantial lead over the next laps as Hackett was having apparent front end problems, possibly tie rod failure. Eck then went on to his second win of the season over Oakes, Lux, Hess, and Bossard.
