Heineman wins Challenger special at Stateline! Hess doubles, Gurdak, Brewer, and Boardman also score victories!

June 9, 2021

Busti, NY (June 5, 2021): Holden Heineman was awarded the victory in the $1200 to win Challenger Special after the apparent winner failed technical inspection at Stateline Speedway. Second generation driver Dave Hess Jr got another two wins in both UMP Modifieds and Super Late Models, Scott Gurdak added another RUSH Late Model win to his resumé,  Al Brewer (RUSH Pro Mods) triumphed for his first Stateline feature win in his 51st year of racing, and John Boardman collected another Pro Stock win to add to his growing collection.

The opening feature of the night was for the RUSH Late Models with DJ Krug and Brian Larson on the front row. Larson took off to the lead over Krug, Bud Watson, Khole Wanzer, and David Parker at the end of one lap. Wanzer was up to third at three laps with Krug falling to fourth. The most recent winner, Steve Dixon, came into the top five, then advanced to fourth at four laps. At five laps the front five were Larson, Watson, Wanzer, Dixon, and Parker. With nine laps in, the race for the lead was nearly even with Watson narrowly ahead at the line. The order at halfway was Watson, Larson, Wanzer, Dixon, and Parker. Caution flew at lap eleven when Logan Jaquay spun in turn four with Scott Gurdak now up to fifth. On the green Wanzer got to second but Krug spun coming to green. At twelve laps it was Bud Watson, Gurdak, Wanzer, Dixon, and former champion Jason Genco up to fifth when Rodney Houser drifted to a halt in turn two. On this green Genco spun from fifth while in heavy traffic. With seven to go it was now Gurdak at the front, followed by Watson, Parker, former champion Darrell Bossard, and Larson. Then Wanzer, Dixon, and Steve Houser tangled. Bossard was third at fifteen laps with Genco back up to fifth at seventeen laps. The order at the finish was Gurdak, Watson, Bossard, Parker, and Genco.

The RUSH Pro Mods were brought to green by 51-year veteran Al Brewer and Mike Eschrich. Brewer led Eschrich, 2019 champion Dennis Lunger, Adam Ashcroft, and Carl Irons throughout the event for his first-ever win at Stateline. The former champion at other area tracks was thrilled to be in Victory Lane at Stateline after all the races he has run here. At 65 years of age, Brewer is one of the oldest drivers to ever win his first feature at the track that was built in 1956. The race ran green to checkers with no caution periods.

Steve Kania and Bob Dorman brought the Super Late Models to green with Dorman leading lap one over a side-by-side battle for second between Kania and Ryan Scott. Bump Hedman was fourth at the end of one with previous winner Wyatt Scott fifth. In turns three and four on lap one veteran Chub Frank spun, slowing the race under yellow. Dorman was still in front at lap two with Kania, Ryan Scott, and Wyatt Scott just ahead of a torrid three-way battle among David Scott, Hedman, and Dave Hess. Yellow was again shown at lap two, this time for Khole Wanzer, spun in turn two. Under the yellow, Kania headed pit side. For the green it was Dorman leading Ryan Scott, Wyatt Scott, Hess, and David Scott. Hess was soon second and leading at lap four over Dorman, Ryan Scott, Wyatt Scott, and Greg Oakes, but before the lap was complete Oakes and Paul Schreckengost spun in turn four. At lap five Wyatt Scott took over second but Hess was speeding away to a half straight lead by lap seven, then a full quarter lap lead at eight laps. His big lead disappeared at lap eleven when Ryan Scott spun in turn four. For the green it was now Hess leading Wyatt Scott, Dorman, Oakes, and David Scott. A lap prior to the halfway point Ryan Scott, Khole Wanzer, and Oakes tangled in turn two. The halfway ranking was Hess, Wyatt Scott, Darrell Bossard, Dorman, and David Scott. David Scott was fourth at fourteen laps. Oakes was back up to fifth at seventeen and Bossard took second at lap twenty with David Scott third at the white flag. The top five wound up being Hess, Bossard, David Scott, Wyatt Scott, and Oakes.

The main event of the evening was the 20-lap, $1200 to win Challenger special, that class's biggest payday of the season. Andy Proper, a former champion, and Tommy LaBarbera brought the race to green with Proper leading Holden Heineman, John Mease, Christopher Leone, and Patrick Todd Hanlon at the end of lap one. Yellow at lap two when Joey Lindberg spun in turn two. Proper continued to lead after green with Mease now second over Hanlon, Leone, and Heineman. Yellow again at lap five when Jon Seekings slowed coming out of turn two and was hit hard by William Sunderlin. Former winner Chris Horton was fifth at lap eight, from twelfth at the start. The halfway point had Proper leading Hanlon, Heineman, Mease, and Horton. The order was the same at five to go but before sixteen laps were done Proper suddenly slowed, his night done with unknown issues. At green Hanlon sped away with Horton coming to third. The checkers had Hanlon the apparent winner over Heineman, Horton, Mease, and Leone. However, during tech inspection, an illegal part was found of Hanlon's car and he was disqualified and moved to the rear of the order, elevating Mark Lawrence to fifth.

The UMP Modifieds took to the track with John Boyd and Tim Peterson at the front with former champion Dennis Lunger and Mike McGee in row two. Boyd led Lunger, Peterson, McGee, and David Hess through lap one with Hess advancing to third at two laps. Butch Southwell came to fifth at lap five when yellow was shown for Justin Carlson, Tim Rockwell, and David Warrior, piled up in turn two. At six laps Lunger was leading Hess, McGee, Southwell, and Boyd. At halfway Dustin Demattia had replaced Boyd for fifth. Yellow at lap thirteen for Zach Johnson, spun in turn two. Another yellow at fourteen for Dave Lanphere, Warrior, and Steve Rex. With five to go Lunger was leading Hess, McGee, Southwell, and Cale Crocker.  In turn two with two laps left Hess went around Lunger for the lead, going on to the win over Lunger, McGee, Southwell, and Crocker.

The race night was capped off by the Penn-Ohio Pro Stocks with Chris Couchenour and Josh Beckstrom at the front of the pack. Couchenour led lap one over Beckstrom, Donald Blood, Paul Schreckengost, and Kreg Schreckengost. Douglas Eck spun in turn four for the first caution. Then Couchenour, the leader, spun in turn one in front of the entire field and was collected by Bill Applebee. For the restart it was Beckstrom, Blood, John Boardman, Kreg Schreckengost, and Matt Sampson. Under the yellow Couchenour retired pit side. At two laps Boardman was leading Beckstrom, Sampson, Blood, and Kreg Schreckengost. Kole Stelmack spun and was hit by Carl Marcy with David Tower also getting involved. At green it was still Boardman followed by Beckstrom, Sampson, Blood, and Kreg Schreckengost. Joe Stajnrajh replaced Schreckengost for fifth at three laps with Sampson up to second at five. Stajnrajh was fourth at eight laps with Douglas Eck now fifth. Jason Black spun in turns three and four and was collected by Applebee and Kreg Schreckengost. For green, with only eight of the starting field of seventeen left, it was Boardman, Sampson, Stajnrajh, Blood, and Beckstrom as the top five. Eck took over fifth at lap eleven. The final top five were Boardman, Sampson, Stajnrajh, Blood, and Eck.
