DIXON WINS PRO MOD SPECIAL WHILE HESS JR., MCGEE, VOLPE, STAJNRAJH, GENCO, WHYTE, AND ECKENROD MAKE THEIR WAY TO VICTORY LANE ON FAN APPRECIATION NIGHT AT STATELINE!

August 21, 2022

Busti, NY (August 20, 2022) by Marc Hoegerl: I once heard that it never rains at Stateline. Well, that held true to the fact, as The New Stateline Speedway held their annual Fan Appreciation Night. With threatening weather surrounding the area, Stateline had no problems getting in night #10 of the 2022 campaign. The packed crowd was entertained once again, with the beautiful singing of the National Anthem, by Josephine Bailey, along with the evenings popular Autograph Session.

The packed crowd finally got to see someone other than the dominant Dennis Lunger pick up a win in the RUSH Pro Mods, as Smethport, PA’s, Steve Dixon broke Lunger’s streak of 8 consecutive wins, by scoring the win in the 25 lap $1,200 to win RUSH Pro Mod Special. Dave Hess Jr. proved that he could start anywhere and win, by picking up his 5th Super Late Model win of 2022. Michael McGee breezed to victory in the UMP Modified class, by scoring win #3 of 2022. Pete Volpe picked up win #2 of the season in the Challengers. Veteran Joe Stajnrajh scored win #2 of the season in the Pro Stocks. Jason Genco was the class of the field in the RUSH Crate Late Models. Treyton Whyte showed his liking to Stateline by bagging the Sharp Mini Late Models A-Main. And newcomer John Eckenrod picked up the win in the RUSH Stock Cars.

First up, due to the schedule change, because of approaching weather, was the RUSH Pro Mods Special. At the drop of the green, Veteran Al Brewer would show the way. The first 5 laps would see a great battle between the top 4 of Brewer, Chad Carlson, Dennis Lunger, and Steve Dixon. Brewer would get a little breathing room before halfway, with all eyes on the battle for 2nd, which changed hands many times, between Carlson, Dixon, and Lunger. Lap 12 would see Dixon finally overhaul Carlson for 2nd, then take the top spot away from Brewer on lap 13. Lap 16 would see Lunger’s streak finally come to an end, while running 2nd, as Lunger would go pit side with mechanical woes. It was smooth sailing the rest of the way for Dixon, as he picked up his 1st Stateline victory of the season, earning a cool $1,200 for his triumph. Brewer, Carlson, Adam Ashcroft, and Zain Harvey rounded out the top 5.

Next to hit the beautifully groomed Chautauqua County speed plant, would be the “Earth Shaking” Super Late Models. Jake Finnerty, who has been fast all season, but can’t seem to get the monkey off his back, would lead the 18 car field down to Spanky Hall’s green. Finnerty would take off at the outset, with 2 time winner Greg Oakes, and youngster, Wyatt Scott in tow. After starting 12th, Dave Hess Jr. would crack the top 5 on lap 2, and then move into 2nd on lap 3, using his signature move on the topside. Hess would dog Finnerty for the next 15 laps, until Hess would use a slider on Finnerty in turns 1 & 2, to take the top spot away on lap 19. Hess would cruise the remaining 6 laps to pick up his 5th win of the season, and his 37 career Super Late Model victory at Stateline. Now putting him only 43 wins behind All Time Winner Dick Barton. Oakes would make a late race run to finish 2nd, Mike Knight would bring home 3rd, as Finnerty, and Wyatt Scott would round out your top 5.

Next on the docket would be the heavily competitive UMP Modifieds. With an extremely tight points battle going into the evening. Two-time winner in 2022, Michael McGee, would jump out to the lead at the drop of the green. McGee would have no serious challenges throughout the event to go on to post his 3rd Stateline win of the season. Greg Johnson, Troy Johnson, Dennis Lunger, and Zach Johnson would round out the top 5. Points leader Cale Crocker would be upended , and turned around by Tim Peterson on lap 11, ending any hopes of picking up the season championship.

It was Pete Volpe all the way in the Challengers. Volpe would lead all 12 laps to score win #2 of 2022. The race of the evening was for 2nd, as Nicholas Robie, and Dan Bittinger would put on a clinic for the bridesmaid position. The two would swap positions numerous times before the halfway mark. Following Volpe across the line would be, Bittinger, Chris Horton, Robie, and Rick Feely.

The RUSH Crate Late Models would be up next to hit the surface for their 20 lap main event. Jason Genco would show why he’s the RUSH Crate Late Models National Points Leader, by dominating all 20 laps in the event from his pole position. Genco coming off a win the night before at Raceway 7, extended his national points lead with his back to back wins over the weekend. David Parker, and Steve Dixon put on a great race long battle for 2nd, with Dixon finally securing the spot on lap 15, as Parker would settle for 3rd, Veteran Scott Gurdak was 4th, and Randy Hall rounded out the top 5.

The Sharp Mini Late Models would be up next for their A-Main. Treyton Whyte would lead the entire distance to pick up the victory. The Whyte family has shown their liking to Stateline this season, as the two have been two of the most dominant cars in their events. Chris Whyte came home a distant 2nd, Ryan Card made a late race charge to finish 3rd, Kyle Coons was 4th, and Ken Owens rounded out the top 5.

The final event of the night would be the newly formed RUSH Stock Car division. The division would see two newcomers compete in the event. In his first night out in the class, Ebensburg, PA’s John Eckenrod made the 3 hour tow worthwhile, picking up his first ever Stateline Speedway victory. Tim Laughard would come home 2nd, and Stateline regular’s, Cody Rickard, and Mikael Beaver would round out the field.
